Hi there, thanks for visiting We(e) Read(s).
I’m Jen, a Cheltenham-based stay at home mum to a toddler and a baby. In my previous life I was a librarian for a well-known academic library service for just over 10 years.
Since I gave up work 2 years ago I’ve found that being a stay at home parent can be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. On the one hand it is such a privilege to be able to hang out with these cool little people all day long and help them learn and grow. And on the other hand it can be mind-numbingly boring! The public library has been such a lifeline for us at those times, providing my little boy and I with different worlds to explore, new things to talk about and fresh ideas for play. And since my little girl was born last year, introducing new and interesting picture books is one of the only ways I can get my 3 year old to sit still for 5 minutes and stop provoking her!
We read on a huge variety of topics but he will inevitably gravitate towards dinosaurs, monsters, pirates and anything with really vivid and colourful illustrations.
I am a huge fan of books written in rhyme and those which have beautiful illustrations with subtle, clever detail where we can spend ages discussing the pictures on just one page.
Once the children are in bed, I am an avid reader of modern fiction, and I usually have a book on the go on each floor of the house along with one on my phone so I can snatch a glance at a few pages whenever I can! I’m a member of a local book club, which has been great for encouraging me to pick up books I might not otherwise have chosen.
When I’m not reading books and entertaining small people, I volunteer as the musical director for a large community choir.
I’ve created this blog as a way of documenting our reading journey, as a creative outlet for me and a way of trying to fend off “mummy brain”, and as a way of connecting with new people.
I hope you enjoy hearing about what We(e) Read(s) 😊
